How deep to set fence posts

As a rule, set a quarter to a third of the post in the ground. For a 1.8m fence use a 2.4m post set about 600mm deep; for gate posts or exposed sites use a 3m post. Dig a hole about three times the post width, add a little gravel in the base for drainage, and set the post in postcrete.
