October is a useful time to take a closer look at your garden fence. Before you order replacement timber, work out whether you need a few new boards or repairs to the structure supporting them. A short inspection and a clear materials list will help you plan the job.
Start with the posts and rails
Walk along the fence in calm weather and look for leaning posts, damaged joints, split boards and loose fixings. Pay particular attention to the timber near ground level. A fresh board will not solve a problem caused by a weakened post or rail.
If a section is unstable, keep clear and have a fencing professional assess it before attempting repairs. Photograph the whole section as well as any damaged areas so you can explain what needs attention.
Clear the fence line
Remove leaves and garden debris that have collected against the bottom of the fence. Check for nearby branches or stored items that could damage it in windy weather. Where branches need substantial work, arrange suitable help rather than cutting them from a ladder beside the fence.
Measure the replacement parts
Write down the length, width and thickness of each component you want to replace. Take a photograph with a tape measure alongside the timber, and note whether your boards overlap or have gaps between them. This is especially useful when matching an existing fence.
- Boards: record the board profile and dimensions, not just the overall fence height.
- Rails: measure the existing rail section and the span it serves.
- Posts: record the timber section and ask your installer to confirm the full replacement length and fixing requirements.
Match your materials to the repair
TMG stocks fence boards, fence rails and fence posts. Check the size options on each product page before ordering. For an overlapping board finish, look at our treated feather edge boards.
Keep fixings, cutting requirements and any treatment of cut ends on your list too. Follow the timber and treatment manufacturer's instructions for the materials you choose.
