Choose driveway gravel by its shape, grading and suitability for traffic, then plan the base, drainage and edging around it. A decorative top layer cannot make up for unsuitable ground preparation.
Start with the surface you need
Our 20mm Grey Gravel is angular whinstone, listed for driveways, paths and parking areas. Its grey appearance makes it a useful starting point when comparing a practical driveway finish. Check a current sample or product photograph before choosing, as natural stone varies.
20mm Pea Gravel has a rounded shape. Rounded and angular stone behave differently underfoot and under tyres; ask your installer to confirm the surface best suited to your slope, traffic and edging. Avoid choosing a driveway material on colour alone.
Separate the base from the finish
Type 1 MOT Sub Base is a graded material intended for compaction beneath a finished surface. It has a different job from decorative gravel. The required excavation, base depth and finished gravel depth depend on the ground and design; a single depth cannot suit every driveway.
A permeable-looking surface also needs a suitable construction below it and somewhere for water to go. Agree drainage details before ordering your materials.
Work out the quantity
For a rectangular area, multiply length in metres × width in metres × depth in metres. For example, an area 5m × 4m with a chosen 50mm layer is 5 × 4 × 0.05 = 1m³. This illustrates the calculation; 50mm is not a specification for every driveway.
To convert that volume into kilograms and bags, you need the chosen aggregate’s bulk density and the pack’s supplied weight. Do not assume that every bulk bag contains a tonne. Use our quantity guide, then ask us to check your product and pack choice.
